Staten Island Columbus Day Parade replaced with an Italian Cultural Festival
The Staten Island Columbus Day parade was cancelled in 2014. In its place there's a Columbus Day Parade Weekend Italian Cultural Festival at Mount Loretto that begins Friday and runs through Monday, October 6 - 9, 2023.
Saturday & Sunday, October 12 & 13, 2024 from 12 noon - 6 Saturday, and until 5 pm Sunday - 13th Annual Fall Festival and Italian Exotic Car Show - at Case Belvedere at 79 Howard Avenue in the Silver Lake neighborhood near Grymes Hill and just south of Tompkinsville on Staten Island. In prior years there's been a Friday night members only event, but I don't see anything like that for this year [2024]. The event features luxurious, classic and performance Italian autos on the lawn, along with Italian food and drink, and live entertainment. This is a Staten Island festival more than a fair in Silver Lake near the Grymes Hill and Tompkinsville neighborhoods of Staten Island. See Casa Belvedere Italian Cultural Foundation for details. Art Exhibits on Staten Island & NYC - Columbus Day Weekend
Click here to view some of the in-progress art exhibits in NYC this columbus Day weekend. There are too many museums to showcase in this short space, but here are a few that are among the highlights of Staten Island museums.
There's the Jacques Marchais Museum in the Lighthouse Hill neighborhood in central Staten Island. It includes a beautiful setting, with Tibetan-like structures perched upon a high hill overlooking the island, although in the summer time a great deal of the view is blocked by tree leaves.
There's the Alice Austen House in the Shore Acres neigbhorhood along the northeast shore of Staten Island. It contains the photos and related works of photographer Alice Austen.
And of course the Snug Harbor Cultural Center along the northern tip of Staten Island in the Randall Manor neighborhood contains a whole collection of artistic, cultural and historical pieces, and they also host a number of musical and theatrical events.
In the photo to your right is a scene inside a temple-like room at the Jacques Marchais Museum in the Lighthouse Hill neighborhood on Staten Island.

History on Staten Island over the Columbus Day Weekend
The Garibaldi Meucci Museum is a centuries old home that was the abode of a great Italian inventor who is arguably one of the inventors of the telephone - Antonio Meucci. He was host to Guisseppe Garibaldi, a military general and strategist, who is credited with unifying Italy in the mid 1800's.
There are a number of historical museums located on Staten Island. One is the Lighthouse Museum which is also located only a stones throw from the St. George Ferry Terminal in the St. George neighborhood of Staten Island. The museum is affiliated with a consortium of federal lighthouse museums dedicated to preserving some of the nation's maritime history.
There's also the Fort Wadsworth Museum near the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. And as mentioned above the Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Randall Manor.
There's also historic Richmond Town which is hosting the popular Richmond Town County Fair and the Conference House which was where Benjamin Franklin attempted to broker a deal with the British Empire prior to the Revolutionary War in order to avert the war. It's one of the rare instances where Benjamin Franklin failed, but even here perhaps he won by losing.

Bicycling on Staten Island NYC
Staten Island doesn't have many bike paths, and the few they have don't provide much protection. Click here to view a report about bike laws in NYC so you can ride safely. There's a program called Citi Bikes, which allows you to rent a bike using your credit card. Whereever you find bike racks filled with blue bicycles - take a closer look and it's probably a Citi Bike rack and you can rent a bike from there and return it to any of their racks around NYC.
I'm working on a useable map of bike trails in Staten Island, of which there are more than I first thought. In the photo to your right, are the 5 Boro Bike Riders cycling through NYC.
